25 Years - Preserving and Caring for the Heritage of Rotherham
1841 Census index of Rotherham
Introduction

The 1841 Census was stored in various repositories until rediscovered some years ago. The returns were recovered and microfilmed and this index was produced by members of Rotherham Family History Society from the 3 films at Rotherham Central Library.

The index covers the surname, forename and age only, but researchers should remember that for 1841 there is normally only occupation and county of birth in addition to this.  Partly because of the handwriting standards of the time and also due to the condition of the originals some parts were very difficult to read and therefore there will undoubtedly be errors.  We hope the methods of checking will have minimised these problems.  As far as we can find the whole of Rotherham is covered, and we are aware of only a very few pages which are missing or significantly damaged.  The order of Enumeration Districts on the 3 films at Rotherham Central Library is given to assist in locating the entry.

Rotherham Family History Society owns the copyright to the index but has made the information available for sale from the RFHS Shop. If you decide to purchase the index please respect our copyright and do not make copies of the disks for other people.

Enumeration Districts

In 1841 the present Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Census, however, did not stick to County boundaries, so the census is made up of parts of Rotherham, Worksop, and Doncaster Registration Districts. The Rotherham District included the Beighton sub-district, most of which was in Derbyshire, some now in Sheffield.  For this index we have limited the coverage to the present RMBC, but we have included Tinsley, which is now part of Sheffield. This is because people born in Tinsley would later have described themselves as born in Rotherham, so researchers could have some difficulty if not aware of this detail.
