My grandfather Wilfred BRIGHTMORE, b.1879 in Rotherham, is shown in the 1881 census as lodging ( although only 2 years old at the time) with John and Mary GIBSON, both born in 1834 in Derbyshire, at a house in Orgreave Road, Catcliffe. Also in the household were William GIBSON, son, aged 18, Hy GIBSON, son, aged 12, and Bertha GIBSON, daughter, aged 9. Most of the family were coal miners. This family is subsequently shown in the 1901 census living in Station Road, Chapeltown, Nr. Sheffield and then consisted of Mary De Orcy GIBSON, widow, aged 67, Eliza A GIBSON, daughter, aged 47, Wilfred Brightmore GIBSON, adopted son, aged 22, and Edwin De Orcy GIBSON, son, aged 19. Edwin died in 1905, aged 24. I would love to hear from anyone who has come across this GIBSON family or the names BRIGHTMORE or DE ORCY in the Rotherham area.

James KERLEY, aged 28, born Co. Armagh, was boarding at 10 Lyme St., Kimberworth, 1881 Census. He is my Great Grandfather. He emigrated to Queensland, Australia after he married at St. Bedes in 1882.. He had a brother, Peter KERLEY who I've never tracked down Is it a coincidence that in 1881 Census, Peter KERLEY, aged 31, (born Ireland) his wife, Bridget, aged 30, and Peter KERLEY's step-children, James (8), Mary A. (6), Jane (4) and David (3) HENRY (children born Rotherham) were at 7 Lyme Street? Would they have been brothers? In 1901 Census Peter KERLEY was no longer in "Lime" Street.
I'd love to know more about this Peter KERLEY and his family. I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

My Great Grandfather William Botham lived in Rotherham at the time of the 1901 census. He was a professional musician (violinist) and may have owned a music shop in the town. Soon after the census around 1902, his baby son (Harold) died and he bankrupted the family with an expensive funeral. I believe he was sent to a debtors prison for a while. After her little brother died, my Grandmother Olive was sent (aged 14) to live with an uncle in Cleethorpes to help support her brothers and sisters. Does anyone know anything about this family? I would be most interested to have some more information.

I am trying to trace any information on the HATTERSLEY family. Esp Charles Hattersley who lived in College Road Masbrough, Rotherham when he married Hannah EVERS at Wath upon Dearne Parish Church on Feb 2nd 1846. Father - Isaac HATTERSLEY was a watch maker. I think Charles was born around 1820.
Hannah's father John EVERS was the parish clerk for Wath upon Dearne.
By 1847 Charles had moved to Leeds where he had a son John Isaac.

Hi from Canada, I have discovered that some of my EARP ancestors found their way to the Barnsley, Sheffield & Rotherham area. 1881 census list my 5xgrandfather John EARP is listed in Rotherham with wife Elizabeth and son James, next door is another son John. 1901 census finds son John and maybe 4xgrandfather Samuel. Samuel married Martha GRIFFITHS, born in Parkgate, date unknown. 3xgrandfather John Francis EARP married Ada JONES in Sheffield. John and Ada came to Canada. If anyone has the resources to the 1861/1871 census, burials or come across the EARP name in any records, I would sure appreciate hearing from you. The 1881/1901 census is the only records I have at this time. thank you and best regards, Sandra Radford.

I am trying to trace the marriage of William TRICKETT and Ann HELLEWELL. According to the IGI the marriage was on 22.8.1824 but it just states 'Rotherham' and does not give details of the church. I have also been told by someone else who is researching this marriage, that this is one of the 'private' entries on the IGI and listed as "bindings". Hi I am Neil Morris - a RFHS member and wondered if any member of the RFHS lived in the Cheltenham area of Gloucestershire as an Australian friend of mine is trying to find information about a one James Wallis of this area.  Her name is Suzanne Martin and she is a local historian in the city of Newcastle in New South Wales and below is an extract of her request for help to her UK friends.
"He was a Commandant of our Penal Colony-yes, that was Newcastle's beginning - and was the founder of our hospital in 1817, built our first church, now Christ Church Anglican Cathedral and left us many other legacies-he was here just 2 years and was 31 years old!! And yet there is nothing in Newcastle to commemorate him - until now. So my interest in our city's history has paid off.
Haven't yet received the bottle of champagne but have had positive feedback from my interviews on 2 radio stations!! I love all this, of course!! But now to my friends in UK, I would like photographs of his grave and its surrounds-any possibility that one of you might be able to visit Prestbury a village a little north west of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. I am also looking for a portrait of him-the Prestbury library cannot help so I may have to follow up with the 46th Regiment to which he belonged and with whom he went to India after Newcastle. I've sent away for his death certificate but it seems he didn't have any children from his 2 marriages."
I would be grateful if any member is able to help and they can get in touch with me - Neil Morris at AstonNM"at"aol.com Thanks, Neil Morris 11/5/2003

According to the 1901 census, my grandfather was born in Rotherham in 1867 and he gave his name as Christopher Pfisterer. His parents (German) took him back to Germany when he was 8 and he returned to England as a young man. I should appreciate knowing the names of his parents so I can continue the search in Germany. My mother said my grandfather's names were Hermann Louis Christian.

My problem: do not know who his parents were.
Question: Does anyone know if there would be a notation of his parents
on the marriage register, or failing that would there have been a
"write-up" in the local newspaper at that time?
If any kind person could give me some pointers I would be very
grateful. My mother was a Dixon born in sheffield. from subsequent
birth certificates, we know these people were our gggrand parents.
thanks in advance

My Father, Robert John, was born at 4 Dovercourt Road U.D. 20 Feb 1909. His mother was Martha Elizabeth Olive FOSTER and his father Robert James WATSON.
I believe his Mum died when he was about 3 or 4 and gfather remarried. There was a brother/stepbrother named Harry. I have a birth cert for Dad but cannot find any other info whatsoever. Gfather was a mechanical engineer and has steam engines (not the train kind!) with H.Watson Weymouth on the side. He was still alive in 1955 I believe.
